# What Is Code Intelligence for AI Coding Agents?

Code intelligence gives an AI coding agent a structured, semantic view of a codebase: declarations, symbols, references, dependencies and change impact. It helps an agent decide which code matters before it reads every file.

## Why file search is not enough

Text search answers where a string appears. It does not reliably tell an agent whether two identical names refer to the same symbol, which function calls another through an import, or which repository consumes a shared type.

That distinction matters during maintenance. An agent changing a function needs callers, implementations, tests and downstream consumers. Those relationships are properties of the program, not just properties of its text.

## What a code intelligence system provides

A code intelligence system typically builds a model of the same kinds of relationships that language tooling exposes through the [Language Server Protocol](https://microsoft.github.io/language-server-protocol/):

- declarations and qualified symbols;
- references, callers and callees;
- packages, files and repositories;
- dependency paths;
- bounded change impact;
- confidence, provenance and unresolved cases.

The last item is important. A reliable tool should distinguish a type-checked relationship from a candidate inferred by a weaker analyzer. It should preserve uncertainty instead of presenting a guess as fact.

## How AI coding agents use it

The agent can start with an intent rather than a filename:

What breaks if I change the authentication interface?

It can then inspect the relevant source after narrowing the search to the symbols and relationships that matter. Kivgraph exposes this workflow through MCP, including [find_by_intent](/docs/tools/find-by-intent/), [find_references](/docs/tools/find-references/) and [get_blast_radius](/docs/tools/get-blast-radius/).

## Code intelligence and MCP

MCP is a protocol that lets AI applications exchange context and invoke tools through supported transports, including stdio and Streamable HTTP. The [MCP architecture specification](https://modelcontextprotocol.io/specification/2025-06-18/architecture) defines the client-server boundary. Code intelligence is the capability behind those tools. An MCP server can expose many kinds of context, but a code intelligence server should answer structural questions with evidence from language-aware analysis.

Kivgraph runs locally and builds a canonical graph across Go, TypeScript, Rust, Python and Dart repositories. Read the [code intelligence guide](/code-intelligence/) for the supported resolution levels and the [quickstart](/quickstart/) to try it.

## The practical test

Ask whether the system can answer these questions without relying on name matching alone:

1. Where is this symbol declared?
2. Who references or calls it?
3. Which dependencies does it reach?
4. Which other repository consumes it?
5. What is the bounded impact if it changes?

If the answer includes the relationship, its source location and its confidence, the tool is providing code intelligence rather than a decorated text search.
