An MCP server gives a coding agent callable tools and structured context through the Model Context Protocol. The protocol is the connection layer; the value depends on whether the server exposes useful, trustworthy answers.

## What an MCP server does

An MCP server presents tools that an agent can call during a task. A code-focused server might expose symbol lookup, source retrieval, reference search, dependency traversal and change-impact analysis. The [MCP architecture specification](https://modelcontextprotocol.io/specification/2025-06-18/architecture) defines the host, client and server boundary that makes these integrations composable.

The agent does not need to know how the server stores its data. It asks for an operation, receives a structured result and decides what to inspect next.

## Why code context matters

An agent that only sees the current file has an incomplete model of the change. It may miss callers, tests, shared interfaces or consumers in another repository.

MCP makes those questions available in the same workflow the agent already uses. The server still needs to resolve symbols using language-aware analysis and state when a relationship is a candidate or unresolved.

## What to evaluate

When comparing MCP servers for coding agents, check:

- Does the tool answer a user question or merely expose a database?
- Does it distinguish exact relationships from guesses?
- Does it preserve repository and source locations?
- Does it support the languages and workspace shape you use?
- Can it run locally when source code must stay on the machine?

Kivgraph is a local cross-repository code intelligence MCP server. Its [MCP client guides](/mcp/clients/) explain how to connect Claude Code, Codex and other clients, while the [tool reference](/docs/mcp-tools/) documents the available queries.

## A practical starting point

Start with one repository, publish its graph and ask a narrow structural question. Then inspect the returned source and compare the result with the [quickstart](/quickstart/).

The best MCP server is not the one with the longest tool list. It is the one that gives the agent enough verified context to make the next decision safely.
